Vernon was born to Simon B. and Lena Heppner Unruh on April 17, 1929 in North Battleford Saskatchewan, Canada. After the death of his parents, Vernon was adopted by Abe F. and Susie Isaac of Shafter California. He attended Maple Elementary school and graduated from Wasco High School in 1948. Following graduation Vernon went to work on the family farm with his father. On July 13, 1951 Vernon and Laura Buhler Isaac were married in Dallas Oregon. Vernon was inducted into the military on October 18, 1951 serving with the 399th Evacuation Hospital in Germany as a medic. After working for his dad the decision was made for Vernon and brother in law Lowell Bergman to form Bergman and Isaac Farms and he farmed until retirement in 1999. Vernon and Laura had three children, Rod, Dan and Stan. Vernon enjoyed the outdoors with camping and fishing at the top of his list of things to do. Vernon was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a scout attaining the level of Eagle Scout and later as a scout master and leader culminating with his being awarded the Silver Beaver Award. Vernon was baptized in 1945 at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. Through the years he was in the church choir, taught Sunday school, worked tirelessly on the dining hall committee, served as a deacon, usher and prayer warrior.
Vernon is survived by wife Laura; sons, Rod and wife Cheryl of Shafter, Dan and wife Lori of Shafter, Stan and wife Cyndi of Dinuba; brothers Doug Peters and wife Donna of Shafter, Glen Peters and wife Eldaline of Wasco, sister Betty Bergman of Shafter, brother Don Isaac and wife Connie of Hillsboro, Kansas; seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Visitation is on Sunday, June 19 at the Peters Funeral Home in Shafter from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Services will take place on Monday, June 20 with a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. at the Shafter cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Shafter MB Church.
