Obituary for Douglas Simon Peters

Douglas Simon Unruh was born October 5, 1932 in Loon Lake, Sask. Canada, to Simon and Lena Unruh. Due to both parents passing at an early age, he and his two brothers, Vernon and Glenn, were brought to the United States by relatives, and they were adopted into related families. Douglas was adopted by E.J. and Elizabeth Peters, of Shafter, California. He grew up in the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church, went to Maple School, then to Wasco High School, and proceeded to graduate from Cal Poly,… San Luis Obispo.

In 1955, Douglas met the love of his life, Donna Rae Newfield, and they were married March 24, 1956. Shortly thereafter, he served 2 years in the military, and Doug and Donna moved to Washington D.C., where they both worked in the Pentagon.

Upon leaving the military, Doug and Donna returned to Shafter, where they raised their three daughters, Deanna, Darleen, and Delayne.

From 1958 until the Company dissolved in 1998, Douglas was part of the family agricultural business, Maple Leaf Enterprises.

Douglas was an avid outdoorsman. Many family vacations revolved around his love of fishing and nature. The highlight of his year was going to Mammoth with his brothers, son-in-laws and nephews. He was also devoted to the Boy Scout Organization. Douglas was an Eagle Scout and Scout Master for many years. He also loved serving the Shafter M.B. Church in various capacities – the longest being an usher for 40 years.

Douglas loved his family, and adored his grandchildren. Doug was involved in every aspect of his family’s life – he attended and supported many sporting events, academic achievements, and endeavors pursued by his kids and grandchildren.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna Peters; daughters, Deanna Peters, Darleen and husband Steve Reimer, Delayne and husband Mark Huskey; grandchildren, Jordan Reimer and wife Amber, Justin Reimer and wife Nicole, Jenae Reimer, Cheyenne and husband Samuel DiPietro, and Savannah Huskey.
