Obituary
Herbert Stover was born July 7, 1933 to Lonnie and Odella Stover in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and moved with his family to Missouri at age 4 . As a child He and His family lived and farmed in several areas of Southeastern Missouri, consequently he went to several different schools, some of them merely one room schoolhouses. He graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in Missouri, Class of 1951.
He deployed into the U.S. Army out of New Madrid, Missouri, serving his country at the end of the conflict in Korea. After completing his service he relocated to Shafter, California and was employed by Maple Leaf Farming Company for a short time.
Herbert then changed careers and went to work in the grocery business. After being employed at Budget Food Mart in Shafter, He partnered with His brother in law Cecil Hight, the two opened and operated S&H Food Liner in Shafter. When the business sold Herbert went back to work at Budget Food Mart for a short period, then owned and operated Ranch Market on the outskirts of Shafter for a period of about 4 years. He then rejoined His brother in law Cecil as part owner of A-1 Superette in Shafter until He retired in the summer of 1981.
He was preceded in death by parents Lonnie and Odella Stover; Sisters Helen Hester and Herma Hight, and brother Herschel Stover. Nephew Allen Hester; nieces Sondra Hester and Donna McLaughlin; and great niece Julie Ann McLaughlin
Having never married He was beloved “Uncle Herb” to numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a large number of great nieces and nephews. Herbert was away known to be willing to lend a helping hand to His many friends and neighbors. His memorial service will be held graveside Friday June 3 at Shafter Cemetery.
