Obituary for Columbus Oscar Rice

Columbus Oscar Rice was born on January 21, 1929 to Oscar and Clemie Rice in Bakersfield, CA.

"Lum" was a native son of the "Rio Bravo AlKali Patch". Lum farmed mostly cotton and alfalfa, some grain and eventually almonds. He first farmed with horses and mules, then tractors and finally with just blood sweat and never tears!

He worked the same piece of ground that he farmed as a boy with his dad and took over responsibility when his father died in 1968.

He continued to farm… through the divorce of his first wife, death of his second wife and until his health failed at the age of 73; then survived the rigors of 14 years of assisted living.

If diligence was a peach, Lum was a peach tree.

Lum was an avid baseball player and fan. He was a mason, a member of the Elks and a member of The First Southern Baptist Church in Shafter, CA.

Lum was from a family of 10 children. Three have proceeded him in death, six survive his passing. Lum leaves behind his daughter Vicki Reyneveld and family and his son Steven Rice and family.

Services will be held Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 11:00am at the 1st Southern Baptist Church at 250 Kern Street Shafter, CA.
