Jerry Dean Schmidt was born April 29, 1937 in Newton, KS, to Jake and Lillie (Knotz) Schmidt. In 1955 he graduated from Wasco High School, and on June 23, 1961, Jerry was married to his loving wife, Helen (Smith) Schmidt. Always a hard working man and a man who cared for others, Jerry worked as a fireman, and also often worked as an EMT here in Shafter. He stayed actively involved in his church congregation; he enjoyed volunteering his time and energy with numerous missions trips, and served as a deacon at Congregational Bible Church. Jerry loved the Lord and was a dedicated servant. He also volunteered for Teen Challenge, Red Cross, and Multiple Sclerosis fundraising events. In 1983 he was named “Shafter Citizen of the Year” by the Chamber of Commerce. He will be missed greatly.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Lillie; his sister, Linda Hammack; son, Ricky Schmidt; and grandson, Brian Huckabee. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Helen Schmidt; daughters, Pamela and husband Dale Huckabee and Deana and husband Corwin Thompson; grandchildren, Amy and husband TJ Brewer, Cody Huckabee, Dusty Huckabee, Courtney Thompson and Aidan Thompson; great grandchildren, Faithe, Broen and Jordyn; his brother, Jim Schmidt and wife Lucille; brothers-in-law, Scott Hammack, Bob Smith and wife Carol and Joe Smith and wife Asonda; a sister-in-law, Ruby and husband Joe Hayworth; and his nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Jerry will be held at Peters Funeral Home on Friday, March 25, 2011 from 2-8p.m. A graveside service will be held at Shafter Memorial Park on Saturday, March 26, 2011 beginning at 10a.m.; a memorial service will follow at Congregational Bible Church beginning at 11a.m. Pastor Mike Kotrla will officiate the services. In Leiy of flowers, donations in Jerry’s name may be made to Congregational Bible Church.
