Janet Bongberg Stockton Services: Sat., Jan. 28, 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., at the Congregational Church, 430 East Tulare Ave., in Shafter. Private interment will precede the memorial service. Janet Stockton was born on February 4, 1952 in Philadelphia, PA. She moved with her family to Shafter in 1955, where her father established a dental practice. She attended Richland School and graduated from Shafter High School in 1970. Janet was involved in a multitude of activities during her school years and developed many enduring friendships. Janet graduated from Bakersfield College and after a long absence raising her children returned to school and graduated from California State University Bakersfield in 1991. She then earned a teaching credential and began a successful teaching career first at Kern Avenue School in McFarland and later at Richland School. Janet was a wonderful teacher and was recognized as such by being named Teacher of the Year in 2001. Her professionalism as an educator was also evidenced by her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Zeta Chapter. Janet was committed to her community and worked as a volunteer with a variety of organizations including the Boy Scouts, the PTA, and the SHS Band Boosters. She also was active in the Shafter United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities. Her most prized role was that of wife and mother. She was a proud mother who had immeasurable love for her three children, Gabe, Nick and Jill; and more recently for her daughter-in-law, J.J. and grandson, Caden. She was married to John Stockton and gave as much support and encouragement to him as any wife could provide. She never lost faith in her familys ability to be successful in meeting their goals and aspirations. In addition to her immediate family, Janet is survived by her parents, Dr. Robert and Lucille Bongberg; brother, Bobby and wife, Wendy of Santa Rosa; brother, Barry of Shafter and special sister, Dominique Coustilliere of Toulon, France. She also leaves behind her mother-in-law, Irene Stockton and sisters-in-law, Sharon Fisk and Beth Remus as well as many loving relatives and friends. Janet lived valiantly with breast cancer for 13 years. She rarely complained though she underwent countless treatments and was often in great physical pain. Special thanks to Dr. Abhay Risbud and the Oncology staff at Kaiser for the wonderful care and compassion and to Lori Smith and Penny Edwards from Optimal Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Janet requested memorial donations to the breast cancer organization Link to Life, 1706 Chester Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93301. Peters Funeral Home-Shafter Legacy.com
