Obituary for Eleno Martinez Cruz

Eleno Cruz passed away May 5th, 2017 in his home in Shafter, CA (Mexican Colony). He was 95 years old. Eleno was born August 17, 1921 in Colorado City, TX, to Marcos and Sabina Cruz. He was drafted into the US Navy on August 7, 1941. He completed his basic training in San Diego, CA. He was then sent to San Francisco to complete his Boat Camp, after completing his training, he was sent to the South Pacific Sea to fight against the Japanese. He was involved in many battles including the capture… of Iwo Jima and Saipan.
He served 16 months active sea duty. He was honorably discharged January 2, 1946, after his discharge, he went back to Texas where he met and married Pauline Heredia, of Amarillo, TX. They were married August 28, 1950 in Amarillo, TX. They moved to CA in 1956. Eleno worked 10 years with S.A. Camp Farms and he retired from Ranchers Cotton Oil. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 50 years in 2001. His daughter Gloria Hernandez in 2017 and his son Manuel Cruz in 2000. He was a very patient and caring father. He was a grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather. He will be missed dearly by the people who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter Josephine and her husband Ed Souza of San Jose, CA, and Sabrina and her husband Barry Walker, of Bakersfield, CA. Sons Robert and his wife Hope Cruz, of Bakersfield, CA, Marcos and his wife Isabel, of Bakersfield, CA, Alexander and his wife, Alicia Cruz, of Shafter, CA, Jesse Cruz, of Shafter, CA, and Daniel and his wife, Yolanda Cruz, of Bakersfield, CA.
I would like to thank Yolanda for all the special help she gave our dad. Also we would like to thank the staff of Gentiva Hospice for their personal care given to our dad in his last days. They were professional and compassionate in their duties.

Visitation is from 6-8pm Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Peters Funeral Home-Shafter, CA
Funeral Service is at 11:30am Friday, May 12, 2017 at Peters Funeral Home Chapel-Shafter, CA, followed by military honors at Shafter Memorial Park
