Chuy was born in Los Angeles, California to Jesus and Socorro Hernandez on March 08, 1959. Chuy and his siblings were raised in the rural farm lands of Bonanza Farms in Bakersfield, California. Chuy graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1977. During his high school years Chuy became a Kern County Sheriff's Office Explorer and dreamed of one day becoming a peace officer. He graduated from Bakersfield College in 06/1980. He graduated from the Basic Training Peace Officer Academy in 04/25/80. In 1981, Chuy fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a peace officer thanks to the Shafter Police Department. Chuy served the City of Shafter as a police officer from 1981 to 1984. In 1983, Chuy met the love of his life, Helen "Lyn" Rios. On 05/12/1984, Chuy married Helen Rios in Shafter, California. In 1984, Chuy was offered a job to serve and protect the citizens of Kern County by the Kern County Sheriff's Office. Chuy thanked the Shafter Police Department for three great years of service and continued his law enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff. Chuy patrolled the North Area for over 20 years and made many lifelong friends during his time as a Police Officer and Deputy Sheriff. Chuy was in charge of the Explorer program for many years. Many of his explorers went on to have successful careers in law enforcement. After retiring from the Kern County Sheriff's Office in 2005, Chuy started his own security company (Dark Night Security) and continued to patrol the outskirts of Bakersfield, California. Chuy was put on this earth to serve and protect. He was proud to wear the uniform and looked forward to every single shift that he worked.

Chuy's favorite vacation destinations were the beach and Las Vegas. Chuy loved barbecuing with family and friends. Chuy was a die-hard Los Angeles Rams fan and cheered for them every Sunday. Chuy often met up with his old beat partners for "Code 7" aka breakfast and coffee. Chuy was a proud and loving husband, father and grandfather. Chuy will always be remembered for his compassion, generosity, kindness and fun-spirited personality. Chuy was always the life of the party, everyone in the room was drawn to him. He had a larger than life persona, his silly grin and hearty laugh will never be forgotten. Chuy never met a stranger, he became friends with everyone he met. If you needed a helping hand he would be the first to offer his assistance in any way he could help. Chuy gave everyone nicknames that stuck with them for life. You knew if he gave you a nickname you had a place in his heart. Chuy had a heart a gold and was often referred to as a big teddy bear.

We truly lost a special person.

Chuy is preceded in death by his father Jesus Hernandez Sr, mother Socorro Hernandez and sister Eva H. Chavez.

Chuy is survived by his wife of 33 years, Helen Hernandez, sons JJ Hernandez(Daisy Hernandez), Matthew Hernandez and Jake Hernandez, siblings Jose Hernandez, Susanna Hernandez and Theresa Hernandez, grandchildren Jesus (Junior) Hernandez Jr and Lily Hernandez.
