Obituary for Daniel Franklin Hammett

Daniel (Dan) Franklin Hammett, 88, peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2018 in Shafter, CA. Born on October 27, 1929 in Hatch, New Mexico to Harvey Elmer Hammett and Frankie Melissa Grimes Hammett and raised by maternal Grandmother Malisa Hilburn Grimes Hale and step-grandfather James Lawson Hale, he grew up in Shafter.
Daniel started working at an early age and had to leave high school to work full time at age 14. He served in Korea in the HQ Co. 3RD BN 8TH Cav Regt., achieving… the rank of Corporal and serving on the Honor Guard for the peace talks at P’anmunjom. During his service he was awarded 3 Bronze Service Stars.
After returning from service, Daniel married Barbara Neeley in 1952 in Shafter. They were happily married for 40 years. He later married Patsy Criswell and they were happily married for 23 years.
Daniel was a member of Free Will Baptist Church, member and past Post Commander both of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion organizations, member and past President of the Model T Club of Kern County. Daniel enjoyed restoring Model A, Model T and classic autos, hunting, camping, fishing, family gatherings, and serving his community. His 2014 Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. was a recent highlight, especially sharing the experience of visiting the Korean War Memorial with his Guardian, grandson Jacob McCurdy.
Daniel was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, first wife Barbara, brother Elmer Chester Hammett, sister Willa Mae Betts McClure and stepson David Gerald Criswell.
Daniel was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by his wife, Pat Criswell-Hammett; his daughter Janice (Tom) McCurdy of Lindsay, CA; son Thomas of Lincoln, CA; stepchildren Mike (Gail) Criswell of Eugene, OR, Elaine Bishop of Bakersfield, CA, Linda (Bob) Perigo of Shafter; Scott (Tammy) Criswell of Shafter; his brother Arthur Betts; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Theresa Hammett of Klamath Falls, OR, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family would like to express heart felt appreciation for the care Daniel received at Carrington of Shafter.
A viewing will be held Thursday, April 26, 2018 from 5-8pm at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter. A memorial service will be held at Free Will Baptist Church, 155 Redwood Drive, Shafter, CA at 11:00am, Friday, April 27, 2018 with graveside services following located at Shafter Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Free Will Baptist Church in memory of Daniel Hammett, 155 Redwood Drive, Shafter, CA, 93263, Honor Flight of Kern County, or Hoffman Hospice of Bakersfield.
