Juan “Johnny” Esqueda Rodriguez
1954 – 2018

Juan “Johnny” Esqueda Rodriguez was called to his Lord on Friday, March 16th, after a short illness. Johnny was born on Dec. 27th, 1954 in Lubbock, Texas to parents Francisco Rodriguez Sr. and Estefana Rodriguez. He was the second oldest of seven children. The family was drawn to the West when better opportunities for work came up. They ended up settling in Shafter, CA when Johnny was in his teens.

Johnny earned his High School Diploma from California Polytechnic State University in 1978. It was there that he met his future wife, Virginia Cota. The couple married shortly after on May 24, 1980 and moved to Bakersfield, CA. Through their devotion as a couple, Johnny was baptized in Jesus’s name on May 25, 1980 by Rev. Fred Madriaga through the Apostolic Assembly Church. Johnny and Virginia went on to have four children. Learning from the example of his father, Johnny was a devoted provider for his family. He worked as a truck driver for 40 years, most notably for Halliburton and Nikolaus Tank Line. With jobs in places like Washington and Alaska, Johnny’s career led him all around the country.

Johnny is most well-known for his devotion and love for his family and friends. He spent countless hours visiting and talking with friends and was always connected to his family. He believed in teaching his children the importance of choosing the right path. Johnny was a dedicated member of the Apostolic Assembly Church. His faith in the Lord helped guide him to the end. Because of this, Johnny was able to face his illness with strength and courage – never showing the struggle.

He is preceded in death by his father, Francisco Rodriguez Sr., and his mother, Estefana Esqueda Rodriguez. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Virginia Rodriguez; three brothers; three sisters; two sons, John Jr. Rodriguez and his wife, Michelle, and Anthony Rodriguez and his fiance, Heather; two daughters, Christina Gonzalez and her husband, Sergio, and Sandra Garza and her husband, Tony Jr.; numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews; and 8 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 23rd, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by services at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Assembly Church, 519 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Bakersfield, CA. Interment will follow immediately after the services at Shafter Cemetery, located at 18662 Santa Fe Way, Shafter, CA.
