Obituary
Scott Edward Merritt, 42, of Bakersfield, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021, after a courageous battle with complications from COVID-19.
Scott was born on May 24th, 1979, to Randy and Pattie Merritt of Wasco. After graduating from Wasco High School in 1997, he went on to study History and Economics at UC, Davis and Cal State, Bakersfield while serving as Manager at Frugatti's Italian Restaurant. After graduating with a BA in History, he was a Football Coach at West High School, Bakersfield and took on a permanent substitute position as a History Teacher.
Scott began his California Highway Patrol career with Cadet Training Class IV-05. Upon graduation, Officer Merritt reported to the Santa Cruz Area in 2006. He subsequently transferred to the Bakersfield Area in 2010 where he received multiple MADD awards and served as a Drug Recognition Expert, Departmental Rangemaster and Weapons Instructor, Special Response Team Grenadier, Advanced Officer Safety Training (AOST) Instructor, and Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force Officer. Scott's bold and faithful service was rooted in a deep loyalty to his community.
In the summer of 1997, Scott met the love of his life, Shanon Tucker, and they married on June 22nd, 2001. They went on to have two children, daughter, Madison and son, Nolan. Scott loved his family dearly and enjoyed taking them on camping trips in the mountains, on road trips to the beach, and was a huge fan of the Giants and the Steelers.
Scott is survived by his grandmother, Rita Woolf; grandparents, Gladys Merritt and Jim Walton; parents, Randy and Pattie Merritt; his wife, Shanon Merritt and two children Madison and Nolan Merritt, his brother Cody Merritt and wife, Danielle and their two children, and a host of extended family.
